Stephen McGuinness - 2022

Steve McGuinness is an contemporary landscape painter based in the Cathedral City of St Albans, having graduated in Fine Art from the Manchester Metropolitan University. He spent a productive period living and working in Palma de Mallorca, including solo exhibitions at the Museo del Casal de Cultura, Soller.

Returning to England he was Head of Art at St Albans High School for Girls for nearly twenty years. He has exhibited his work both nationally and internationally. Stephen’s work demonstrates a profound fascination with the natural world and it is rooted firmly in the solitary contemplation of the sublime beauty of the landscape. It is in this sense that these paintings may be considered as a meditation on the isolation felt by many of us on life’s journey. There is a strong connection with the Celtic tradition of ‘Thin Places’ and the belief that such places are sacred. This belief suggests that heaven and earth exist just three feet apart but in the thin places this distance is decreased still further.

Stephen’s paintings in oils, acrylic and water colour invite the viewer to consider the spiritual significance of the natural world.
