James Willis - 2026

James Willis is a painter from Hitchin. His work reflects the world around him through its representation of architecture and landscape - often painted En Plein Air.

Particular favourite subjects are the Hertfordshire Landscape, Italy - especially Venice, London architecture and, more recently, figures and portraits.

He runs a full programme of art and art history workshops in an around the area and often lectures on all aspects of Art History for local organisations and groups.

His work in arts education has extended to Sir John Soane's Museum, Bartlett School of Architecture, Makerere University, Uganda, and many other institutions.

Exhibitions have included a collection of large panoramic canvases of the London skyline at the Southbank's Oxo Gallery; Views of India for the India High Commission, Hertfordshire architecture at North Herts. Museum . His work has been elected for the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour. This year a watercolour was selected for the Fabriano in Aquarello 2024 International exhibition.

His book, Painting Buildings in Oils, was published in 2020 and he has contributed features in drawing and painting to national publications. In 2025 he will be leading a painting tour to the Watermill at Posara, Tuscany.
